Chris Longenecker, MD is an Associate Professor in the Department of Medicine and an Assistant Professor in the Department of Pathology at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine. He serves as Founding Faculty Co-Lead of the Andrew B. Kaufman World Medicine Pathway and Medtronic Professor of Biomedical Discovery and Innovation. As Medical Director of the UH Harrington Heart & Vascular Institute Research and Innovation Center, his clinical expertise focuses on preventive cardiology and non-invasive cardiac imaging, particularly in HIV-related cardiovascular complications.
Education: MD from The Ohio State University (2006), BA from Eastern Mennonite University (2001), and French studies from Université de Nancy (2000). Postgraduate training includes internal medicine residency at UCSF, cardiology fellowship at UH/Case Western, and a research fellowship at The Ohio State University.
Research interests center on chronic inflammation's role in cardiovascular risk among HIV patients, global health infrastructure in Uganda (focusing on rheumatic heart disease and HIV-CVD linkages), and practical CVD prevention strategies. He leads the EXTRA-CVD trial testing nurse-led interventions for blood pressure/cholesterol management in HIV clinics.
Recent articles highlight studies on HIV-associated coronary atherosclerosis, sex differences in cardiovascular outcomes, and telehealth adaptations for CVD care in HIV populations. Awards include teaching and mentoring accolades for his work with trainees in the US and Uganda.
Grants from NIH and private foundations support his work. He mentors students globally and collaborates on initiatives like Uganda's national RHD registry and cardiac catheterization laboratory development.
