Chris Kanich is an Associate Professor at the University of Illinois at Chicago in the Department of Computer Science. He serves as the Associate Dean for Faculty Affairs in the College of Engineering since Fall 2025. Previously, he was the Director of Undergraduate Studies from Fall 22 to Fall 24.
His research focuses on sociotechnical cybersecurity and algorithmic fairness, including privacy needs of Internet users, deep learning threats, and security tools like SSO and VPNs. He has secured over $5.5 million in grants and received the NSF CAREER award along with multiple teaching and advising awards at UIC.
He actively contributes to science communication via YouTube and TikTok, and has served on the Chicago Advisory Redistricting Commission and the board of the educational nonprofit Project:VISION.
