Chris Forster

Chris Forster is an Emerson Faculty Fellow and Associate Professor of English at Syracuse University's Arts & Sciences college. His research focuses on modernist literature, media history, and digital humanities. He holds a PhD from the University of Virginia (2011) and a BA from Providence College (2003).

Research interests include modernism, twentieth-century British literature, obscenity debates, media ecology, and digital humanities. His recent book Modernism and Its Media (2021) explores media intersections with literary production. He has received grants like the Mellon Foundation's Statistical Foundations for Computational Literary Studies (2020–2023).

• Awards: Mellon New Directions Fellow (2020–2023)

Teaching includes courses on James Joyce, digital humanities, and critical theory. He advises graduate students on twentieth-century literature, obscenity history, and digital projects. Active in academic service, he serves on committees such as the Syracuse Scholar Award Committee and the English Department Field Exam Essay Meeting.

Affiliated with the Digital Humanities group (ILM), his work bridges traditional literary studies with computational methods. Current projects examine early 20th-century media ecologies and the reception of controversial artworks in America.
