Chris A Barcelos

Chris A Barcelos is an Associate Professor at the University of Massachusetts Boston in the Women's, Gender, and Sexuality Studies department within the College of Liberal Arts. They also hold affiliations with the Critical Ethnic and Community Studies and Latino Studies programs, and serve as the Director of the Queer and Trans Studies minor.

Their research focuses on critical public health, sexualities studies, and transgender studies, with a specific interest in queer of color critique and youth health equity. They employ community-based research to analyze public health efforts, integrating critical race theory and feminist theory.

Recent publications include 2023 articles on queer safer sex technologies, trans youth leadership, and racialized school safety, as well as 2022 works examining the affective politics of trans healthcare crowdfunding and intersectional health disparities. Their 2020 book, Distributing Condoms and Hope: The Racialized Politics of Youth Sexual Health, received the American Sociological Association Sociology of Sexualities Distinguished Book Award in 2022. They are also a senior fellow at the Center for Applied Transgender Studies and a consultant with Think Again Training.
