Chong Ming is a Research Professor of Politics at East China Normal University in Shanghai, specializing in the history of Western modern political thought. He holds a BA in History from Nanjing University (1996), MA and PhD in History from Peking University (1999, 2003), followed by postdoctoral research at École Normale Supérieure Rue d'Ulm (2003–2005). He has been a visiting scholar at EHESS and Harvard University.
His research focuses on French liberalism (Montesquieu to Tocqueville), Rousseau's political thought, contemporary French political philosophy, and Christian political thought in Western and Chinese contexts. Notable works include Create Liberty: Tocqueville's Reflections on Democracy (2014) and Enlightenment, Revolution and Liberty (2018). He also edits a Chinese selection of Tocqueville's works, with three volumes published.
Recent conference presentations include discussions on Montesquieu's Moderate Enlightenment (2019) and Tocqueville's views on religion and freedom (2019).
