Chitra Divakaruni

Dr. Chitra Divakaruni is the McDavid Professor of Creative Writing at the University of Houston's College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences, Department of English. She holds a Ph.D. from the University of California at Berkeley and is an internationally renowned author of 23 books translated into 30 languages.

Her research focuses on creative writing with emphasis on Indian diaspora experiences, feminist perspectives, historical reinterpretations, and mythological retellings. Her works explore themes of cultural identity, women's struggles, and immigrant experiences.

Divakaruni has received numerous prestigious awards including two American Book Awards, PEN awards, international literary prizes, and recognition as one of The Economic Times' 20 Most Influential Global Indian Women. She serves on advisory boards for organizations combating domestic violence (Daya, Maitri) and supporting education (Akshaya Patra).
