About
Chii Jou (Joe) Chan is an Assistant Professor at the Department of Biological Sciences, National University of Singapore, with a joint appointment at the Mechanobiology Institute. He received his PhD from the University of Cambridge and conducted postdoctoral research at EMBL Heidelberg.
- B.A., M.Sc. (First Class Honours), University of Cambridge
- M.Phil., University of Cambridge
- Ph.D., University of Cambridge (with Prof. Jochen Guck at Cambridge and TU Dresden)
His research focuses on mechanobiology in mammalian development, particularly how mechanical forces and hydraulic pressure regulate oogenesis and embryogenesis. He investigates tissue self-organization, mechanochemical feedback, and fluid dynamics in developmental processes using biomechanical tools, deep tissue imaging, and mathematical modeling.
Recent publications highlight his work on Brillouin microscopy, micro-elastography, and hydraulic regulation in folliculogenesis and embryogenesis. His laboratory develops synthetic biomimetics and biophysical techniques to understand mechanical-molecular interactions.
- START (Singaporean Teaching and Academic Research Talent) Inauguration Grant
- EIPOD (European International Postdoctoral) fellowship
He teaches courses in quantitative biology, pattern formation, and reproductive biology. His laboratory team includes researchers like Kasie Au, Lois Yaw, and Kosei Tomida, working on various aspects of mammalian development and tissue mechanics.
