Dr. Chiara Pierobon is a Senior Lecturer and Researcher at the European University Viadrina, where she teaches in the Master's programme European Studies. She holds a bi-national PhD in Sociology and Social Research awarded by the University of Bielefeld (Germany) and the University of Trento (Italy).
Her research focuses on several key areas:
- EU's promotion of civil society in Central Asia
- Democracy, human rights and sustainable development
- Prevention of violent extremism (PVE)
- Public diplomacy
- Social capital and resilience
- European culture, music, and national identity
Dr. Pierobon has published in peer-reviewed journals including Central Asian Affairs, Central Asian Survey, Development Policy Review, and Evaluation. She has contributed to edited volumes published by Nomos, Palgrave Macmillan, Routledge, Sage, and Springer.
Her academic appointments include:
- Former DAAD Visiting Professor at University of Washington, Seattle
- Visiting Professor at Otto-von-Guericke University Magdeburg
- Visiting Professor at Asia-Europe Institute of Malaya University
- Visiting Scholar at American University of Central Asia, German Kazakh-University, UC Berkeley, and St. Petersburg State University
She has managed education exchange initiatives funded by the European Commission and DAAD, as well as Volkswagen Foundation research projects in Central Asia. She also works as a consultant for DVV International, EUCAM, ENC, and UNESCO.
For Sommersemester 2025, she teaches courses on European Culture and Music, EU's External Promotion of Democracy, and Social Research Methods focusing on Civil Society.
