Dr. Cheng Lin is an Associate Professor at the Law School of Fujian Normal University, China, appointed in autumn 2021. He holds a PhD from King's College London, where he was awarded one of the twenty King's Outstanding PhD Thesis Prizes for 2021 after passing his viva without corrections in January of that year. His doctoral research was fully funded by the King's College London-China Scholarship Council's Joint Scholarship, of which he was one of seven recipients in 2017.
Dr. Lin's educational background includes a Master in International Economic Law (2016) and Bachelor in Law (2014) from China University of Political Science and Law (CUPL). He passed the National Bar Exam in 2013 and holds Chinese legal qualification. His professional experience includes an internship research project at the International Association of Credit & Investment Insurers (the Berne Union) during 2019-2020, where he researched the legal nature of buyer credit insurance and buyer credit guarantee under supervision of the Secretary General and Associate Director.
His research interests focus primarily on insurance and commercial law, with particular expertise in export credit insurance and export credit guarantee from a contractual perspective. He also explores broader issues in international economic law, including international trade instruments and investment protection. His work contributes to UN Sustainable Development Goals related to economic development and legal frameworks.
Dr. Lin's scholarly output demonstrates consistent focus on export credit mechanisms, with publications examining contractual aspects, legal validity of claim provisions, and the relationship between guarantees and insurance. His research combines theoretical legal analysis with practical insights from industry collaborations, particularly with the Berne Union.
Among his recognitions, Dr. Lin received the prestigious King's Outstanding PhD Thesis Prize for 2021. His professional activities include multiple presentations on export credit agencies and document discovery in insurance proceedings at academic venues.
Before his academic appointment, Dr. Lin gained practical legal experience through internships at China Export & Credit Corporation (2017), Yuqing Zhang Law Firm Beijing (2016-2017), The Supreme Court of China (2014), Deheng Law Firm Beijing (2014), and The Legal Clinic of CUPL (2012-2013). Notably, he served as an arbitration assistant for Prof. Yuqing Zhang, a WTO panel member and chief arbitrator at CIETAC.
