Dr. Chelakara Subramanian is a Professor and Program Chair in the Department of Aerospace, Physics and Space Sciences at Florida Institute of Technology (Florida Tech). He holds affiliations with organizations such as the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) as an Associate Fellow and the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) as a Senior Member. His research focuses on fluid dynamics, aerodynamics testing, wind engineering, and wireless instrumentation. He has developed and deployed wireless sensor networks (WSNs) to collect real-time data during hurricanes, particularly analyzing wind loads on residential structures and mitigation strategies.
Dr. Subramanian has extensive experience in outreach, including mentoring high-school STEM students in wind tunnel testing and hosting international interns. He has consulted on industrial projects related to environmental impacts of wind turbines and hurricane resilience. As a panel reviewer for NASA, NSF, and DoD, he evaluates project proposals and textbooks in fluid mechanics.
His research interests span boundary layer meteorology, environmental remediation, and atmospheric sciences. Recent studies include analyzing hurricane wind patterns using LIDAR, optimizing wireless sensor networks for disaster monitoring, and investigating drag reduction in flexible wires at low Reynolds numbers. He has contributed to over 85 publications in journals and conferences, with a focus on experimental and computational fluid dynamics.
Dr. Subramanian leads the Florida Tech team in hurricane loss modeling and damage prediction, particularly for residential structures. His work integrates engineering, environmental science, and data analysis to enhance disaster preparedness and infrastructure resilience.
