Chas Williamson is the Willis H. Carrier Professor of Engineering at Cornell University's College of Engineering. He earned his Ph.D. in Fluid Mechanics from Cambridge University in 1982, following research roles at the National Maritime Institute and industry positions. His academic career includes visiting professorships at École Polytechnique (France), Caltech, and Oxford University.
Dr. Williamson's research explores complex fluid phenomena including vortex dynamics, energy harvesting systems, cyber-physical fluid interactions, and unsteady flow behavior. His work integrates theoretical modeling with experimental innovation, particularly in vortex-induced vibrations, bluff-body flows, and renewable energy applications. Key investigations address aircraft wake instabilities, ground-effect vortex pairs, and fluid-structure interactions in extreme conditions.
Recent publications demonstrate sustained focus on vortex mechanics and flow control, with emphases on stability analysis, Reynolds number effects, and predictive modeling of oscillatory systems. This body of work advances fundamental understanding while supporting applications in sustainable energy and aerospace engineering.
