Dr. Charu Maithani is a Lecturer in Media, Journalism & Communication at the School of Arts & Media (SAM) at UNSW Sydney. Her research focuses on media ecologies, digital art, and visual practices, emphasizing material-discursive frameworks that explore mediality and the political/aesthetic dimensions of media objects. She has professional experience in arts curation, television/film production in India, and digital media education.
Research interests include screens in postmedia assemblages, generative AI's impact on visual culture, and South Asian media practices. She is currently developing a sole-authored book on screens in contemporary media contexts (Amsterdam University Press). Her work also examines data practices and perceptual shifts in digital media culture.
Teaching includes undergraduate courses on digital self-practices and postgraduate modules on data storytelling and broadcast media. She advises on topics like postmedia studies, media materiality, and internet histories. Her creative work is showcased at charumaithani.net.
