Charles Stocking

Charles Stocking is an Associate Professor jointly appointed in the Department of Kinesiology and Health Education and the Department of Classics at the University of Texas at Austin's College of Liberal Arts. He holds a Ph.D. in Classics (2009) from UCLA, where he previously worked as a strength and conditioning coach for Olympic athletes. His research bridges ancient physical culture, philosophy, and modern receptions of antiquity.

Research Focus: Stocking specializes in the history of the body, Greek poetry, and sport, with emphasis on:

• Mytho-poetic discourses of sacrifice and power in Archaic Greece
• Reception of Homer and Hesiod in modern French philosophy
• Cultural politics of ancient athletics and the Olympics
• Intersections of gender, religion, and physical training from antiquity to modernity
