Charles R. Wilson

Prof. Dr. Charles R. Wilson is the Kelly Gene Cook Sr. Professor of History and Director of the Center for the Study of Southern Culture at the University of Mississippi. He held a visiting professorship at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz during Summer Semester 2009, contributing through seminars, public lectures, and participation in a summer school organized by the American Studies Department.

His research focuses on Southern Studies, redefining the field through seminal works like the Encyclopedia of Southern Culture (1989), which catalyzed global perspectives on Southern cultural connections. Key interests include transnational cultural links between the U.S. South and the Caribbean, as well as interdisciplinary approaches to regional identity.

Wilson's academic contributions have inspired new research directions, emphasizing the South's role in global contexts. During his Mainz visitation, he presented lectures titled 'New Directions in Southern Studies' and 'The South in Global Perspectives,' highlighting his commitment to expanding scholarly discourse.
