Charles Pillow

Charles Pillow is an Assistant Professor of Jazz Saxophone at the Eastman School of Music, University of Rochester. He specializes in contemporary jazz performance, woodwind doubling, and saxophone pedagogy. Pillow has released seven recordings including acclaimed works like Electric Miles (2018) and Triocity (2017). His performances span collaborations with major artists such as Brad Mehldau, John Scofield, and Maria Schneider.

His research focuses on expanding saxophone techniques across genres, with publications including The Art of Doubling: A Saxophonist's Guide to Flute, Clarinet and Oboe and Jazz Etudes on Great American Standards for Flute and Clarinet. Pillow's work bridges classical and contemporary jazz traditions, emphasizing interdisciplinary artistry through projects like Van Gogh Letters, which interprets visual art through music.
