About
Dr. Charles Ofria is a Professor of Computer Science & Engineering at Michigan State University and Core Faculty in the Ecology, Evolution, and Behavior program. He serves as Director of both the MSU Digital Evolution Laboratory (Devolab) and the BEACON Center for the Study of Evolution in Action. Previously, he served as President of the International Society for Artificial Life.
Dr. Ofria's research focuses on the intersection of computer science and evolutionary biology, exploring how evolution produces complex traits, behaviors, and intelligent processes. His work spans multiple domains including the evolutionary origins of biological complexity, early evolution of intelligent behaviors, major evolutionary transitions from single cells to multicellular organisms, and the evolution of coordination and cooperative behaviors. His research leverages digital organisms to simultaneously learn about life as it is on Earth while exploring 'life as it could be'.
He is the architect of the Avida Digital Evolution Research Platform, used in research and education at hundreds of universities worldwide. His laboratory develops several significant software projects including the Empirical Scientific Software Library, the Modular Agent-Based Evolver (MABE) v2.0, Emperfect, and the Question-Bank Language (QBL).
Dr. Ofria received his bachelor's degree in 1994 from SUNY Stony Brook with a triple major in Pure Math, Applied Math, and Computer Science. In 1999, he earned his Ph.D. in Computation and Neural Systems from the California Institute of Technology, followed by a three-year postdoc at MSU's Center for Microbial Ecology. He has been a professor at MSU since 2002.
His work on open-ended evolutionary computation and evolutionary dynamics has significant implications for both understanding natural evolutionary processes and developing more robust computational systems, particularly as Moore's Law slows and distributed computing becomes increasingly important.
