About
Dr. Charles A. Haynes is a Professor and Tier 1 Canada Research Chair in Interfacial Biotechnology at the University of British Columbia (UBC), holding dual appointments in the Michael Smith Laboratories and the Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering. He leads research focused on biomolecular interactions, biopurification technologies, and diagnostic tools leveraging digital PCR and aptamer discovery. His lab develops innovative solutions for cancer diagnostics, anticoagulant reversal agents, and protein purification methods.
Education: PhD in Chemical Engineering (UC Berkeley, 1991), B.Sc. in Chemical Engineering (UT Austin, 1986). Professional memberships include Fellowships of the Royal Society of Canada and Canadian Academy of Engineering.
Research spans molecular thermodynamics, aptamer selection (Hi-Fi SELEX platform), and bioseparations. Key projects include droplet digital PCR for cancer genotyping, universal heparin reversal agents (UHRA), and hyper-branched polyglycerols for drug delivery. Collaborations involve engineers, pathologists, and industry partners.
- Key Technologies: Digital PCR assays, aptamer discovery, bioseparation media design
- Impact Areas: Cancer diagnostics, thrombosis management, protein purification
Publications highlight advancements in droplet digital PCR protocols, polyphosphate inhibitors, and molecular modeling of nucleic acids. Awards include UBC Killam Research Prize and NSERC Steacie Fellowship.
