About
Charles Girard is a Professor at the Faculty of Philosophy of Jean Moulin University Lyon 3. His research focuses on political philosophy, philosophy of law, and philosophy of social sciences, with specific interests in theories of democracy, collective decision-making, freedom of expression, media regulation, and normativity. He manages the Master's program in Political, Legal, and Ethical Philosophy and teaches courses on political and legal philosophy, philosophy of democracy, and research methodology.
His recent publications (2024-2025) analyze conflicts within freedom of expression, media pluralism, and democratic deliberation. Articles explore tensions between editorial freedom and ideological diversity, particularly in French media regulation. Earlier works (2010s) examine human sciences epistemology and historical democratic practices.
He actively engages in public debates, as seen in interviews with Philosophie magazine (2024) and appearances on France Culture (2020) and the Court of Cassation (2023). Girard emphasizes that media pluralism supports, rather than constrains, free expression, aligning with Habermasian public sphere theory.
