Charles Garner

Dr. Charles Garner is an Associate Professor in the Department of Chemistry at the University of Memphis since 2018. Prior to this, he served as Professor and directed graduate and REU programs at Baylor University (2005-2017), where he taught organic chemistry and advanced laboratory courses. His research bridges organic synthesis and analytical chemistry, focusing on catalyst screening, chiral selectors, and vapor diffusion studies.

• PhD in Organic Chemistry (1986) and BS in Chemistry (1981)
• Extensive postdoctoral and industrial experience, including NIH Fellowship (1988-1989)

Dr. Garner's work spans organic synthesis, capillary gas chromatography, and purification techniques. Current projects include developing hydrazinopyridine ligands for metals, chiral boranes, and nonlinear optical materials. His lab leverages GC technology for reaction discovery and catalyst evaluation, emphasizing cost-effective and rapid methods.

His group has presented at major conferences like the National Organic Symposium and Southwest Regional ACS meetings. Notable lab achievements include quantifying solvent parameter changes in vapor diffusion crystallization, published in Dalton Transactions (2019). Students in his lab have received recognition, including Forough Rahim (ACS Organic Division travel grant) and Jared Kaiser (second place at Mole Day 2019).

Dr. Garner also contributes to education through initiatives like the ACS Science Coach program, collaborating with Memphis University School since 2020. His laboratory, established at the University of Memphis in 2018, prioritizes efficient synthesis, analysis, and training the next generation of chemists.
