Charles Bean is a Professor of Economics at the London School of Economics (LSE) and Chairman of the Centre for Economic Policy Research (CEPR). He held significant roles at the Bank of England (2000–2014) as Chief Economist and Deputy Governor for Monetary Policy, and at the Office for Budget Responsibility (2016–2021) as an Executive Member. He has also served as President of the Royal Economic Society and as Managing Editor of the Review of Economic Studies.

Bean's research focuses on monetary policy, central banking, economic history, and macroeconomic policy. His recent work addresses Eurozone resilience and economic statistics quality, while earlier contributions analyze post-war British economic growth, unemployment dynamics, and trade performance.
