Chad Raphael

Chad Raphael is a Professor of Communication at Santa Clara University's College of Arts and Sciences. He holds a B.A. from Harvard University and a Ph.D. from Northwestern University. His research focuses on political and environmental communication, emphasizing community-engaged research for environmental justice and deliberative democracy. He co-edited Ground Truths: Community-Engaged Research for Environmental Justice and authored Investigated Reporting, which received multiple awards. Raphael has led SCU initiatives like Sustainability across the Curriculum and the Environmental Justice and the Common Good Initiative. He previously chaired the Communication Department and played key roles in designing the university's Core Curriculum and Strategic Plan.

Raphael's work extends beyond academia: he serves on the board of the Jessie Smith Noyes Foundation, co-chairs the Clean Electronics Production Network, and previously led the Silicon Valley Toxics Coalition. His teaching includes courses on Media and Technology Studies, Environmental Communication, and Community Organizing. He actively involves undergraduate students in co-authoring research, blending scholarship with mentorship.

His recent publications explore environmental justice frameworks, campus diversity deliberation, and the role of simulation games in fostering empathy. He advocates for equitable public engagement in policy-making through forums and civic dialogues. Awards include three best book prizes for his groundbreaking work on investigative media and democracy.
