About
Celeste Curington is an Associate Professor of Sociology at Boston University. Her research focuses on intersectional oppression and inequalities across race, gender, class, and citizenship, particularly among African diaspora communities and communities of color in the U.S. and Europe. She examines systemic racism in care work, digital sexual racism in online dating, and the sociohistorical legacies of colonialism on contemporary labor dynamics.
Her major works include Laboring in the Shadow of Empire: Race, Gender and Care Work in Portugal, analyzing anti-Black racism in Portugal’s care economy, and The Dating Divide: Race and Desire in the Era of Online Romance (co-authored), which explores 'digital-sexual racism' in online dating platforms. She is currently researching BIPOC birth workers’ experiences in Massachusetts amid national reproductive justice challenges.
Curington’s work bridges historical and contemporary analyses, combining ethnography with intersectional frameworks. Her research has been featured in high-impact journals like the American Sociological Review and widely covered by media outlets including The New York Times and Time Magazine.
She holds a PhD from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, and maintains an active presence in public sociology through media commentary and advocacy.
