Cecily Ryan

Cecily Ryan is an Associate Professor in the Department of Mechanical & Industrial Engineering at Montana State University, affiliated with the Norm Asbjornson College of Engineering. She holds roles in the Materials Science program, Center for Biofilm Engineering, Energy Research Institute, and Montana Nanotechnology Facility. Her education includes a Ph.D. from Stanford University (2016), M.S. from California Institute of Technology (2002), and B.S. from MIT (2000).

Her research focuses on biodegradable polymers, composites, additive manufacturing, and sustainable materials. Key interests include biochar applications, waste material reuse, and environment-material interactions. She teaches courses like Engineering Materials, Polymeric Materials, and Thermodynamics.

Dr. Ryan’s work emphasizes formability of carbon fiber composites, biochar-based materials, and environmental impact reduction. Recent articles explore composite forming, carbon nanofillers, and sustainable plastic alternatives. She received the 2021 Young Investigator Award from the Bioenvironmental Polymers Society.

Her grants include an NSF CAREER award for additive manufacturing research. Service roles include President of BEPS and reviewing for journals like Journal of Reinforced Composites. She actively engages in outreach, including Women in Engineering initiatives.
