Cecelia Lie-Spahn is a Lecturer in English and Associate Director of the First-Year Writing Program at Barnard College, where she also serves as Director of the First-Year Writing Workshop Program. She holds a PhD in Feminist Studies from UC Santa Cruz and a BA in English and Creative Writing from Barnard College. Lie-Spahn's research applies feminist science studies approaches to transnational reproductive health and justice, with a specific focus on underground markets for misoprostol in contexts where abortion is restricted. Her work challenges racialized dichotomies of primitivism and technological progress across transnational, legal, and bodily boundaries.
She has received significant recognition for teaching excellence including Barnard's Teaching Excellence Award (2021) and the Fund for Innovation in Teaching (2023). Her courses include Academic Writing Intensive, The Art of the Essay, and specialized seminars on Race, Science, and Reproductive Justice.
