Cato Berg is an Associate Senior Scholar and social anthropologist affiliated with the Department of Social Anthropology at the University of Bergen. His research focuses on Solomon Islands, particularly urban ethnicities, kinship systems, land tenure conflicts, and the socio-political dynamics of logging-related disputes. He holds an M.A. and Ph.D. from the University of Bergen, with fieldwork spanning 1996 and 2000-2001.
Previously a Lecturer at the department, he contributed to curriculum design, including the course 'Social Life in Global Perspective' (SANT 102). He co-founded the Western Solomons Research Database (2007–2017) with Edvard Hviding and Graham Baines, collaborating with the Western Province Government of Solomon Islands.
Berg’s work emphasizes the interplay between customary land practices, urban-rural power networks, and historical legacies of conflict.
