The Courtauld Institute of Art, University of LondonAbout
Cathy Corbett is an Associate Lecturer at The Courtauld Institute of Art, specializing in 20th-century sculpture with a particular focus on wooden sculptures and Russian émigré artists. She completed her PhD at The Courtauld in 2022 with a thesis examining Ossip Zadkine's works in wood from 1908-1940.
Her research interests span direct carving techniques, modern British art, Russian sculpture of the 19th and 20th centuries, and the Arts and Crafts movement in both Russia and Britain. She has presented extensively on Zadkine's career, examining his cross-Channel artistic exchanges between Paris and London.
Her recent publications demonstrate expertise in early 20th century sculpture, with particular attention to wood as a medium and the experiences of émigré artists. Her work shows consistent engagement with Russian-French artistic exchange and the development of modernist sculpture across Europe.
Corbett has been actively involved in academic events at The Courtauld, serving as co-convenor of the Sculptural Processes Group since 2015 and co-organizing several conferences on 20th century art history. She previously worked as a Post doc assistant in the Prints Department at The Courtauld on Gauguin's manuscript.
