Professor Catherine Yule is Professor of Ecology at the School of Science, Technology and Engineering, University of the Sunshine Coast, and member of the Centre for Bioinnovation. With 30+ years researching Southeast Asian ecosystems, her work focuses on tropical peat swamps, rivers, and lakes. She holds a PhD from James Cook University and MSc/BSc from Monash University.
Research Focus:
Pioneering studies on tropical ecosystem functioning using microbial ecology, metagenomics and phytochemistry, with emphasis on carbon sequestration in peat swamps. Secondary research includes bioprospecting for antimicrobial compounds from novel bacteria species.
Publications:
Recent articles (2024-2025) demonstrate strong focus on climate change impacts on freshwater ecosystems, carbon dynamics in peatlands, and biodiversity monitoring techniques. Trends include interdisciplinary approaches combining field ecology with molecular techniques.
Teaching:
Courses in Tropical Biology, Freshwater Ecology, and Environmental Science.
Professional Affiliations:
- Editorial Board: Biotropica, Aquatic Sciences
- Member: Association for Tropical Biology, Society for Conservation Biology, International Mire Conservation
