Dr Catherine Smyth is a Senior Lecturer and Program Director for the B.Ed. (Primary) degree at the Sydney School of Education and Social Work, University of Sydney. She coordinates HSIE K-6 curriculum units in teacher education programs and has extensive experience in primary education, curriculum development, and international teaching. Her research focuses on historical thinking, epistemic fluency, and creative pedagogies in teacher education. She holds a PhD from the University of Sydney, an M.Ed. (Research), and a BA (DipEd) from Macquarie University.
Research interests include primary teachers' professional knowledge construction, the intersection of personal and social epistemology, and innovative methodologies in education. Notable projects include work on teacher continuing professional development in Indonesia and the 'Future Teachers Project' with NSW Department of Education partners. She has received teaching excellence awards and contributed to national curriculum development for history and HSIE.
Awards include the 2010 Faculty Teaching Excellence Award and Discovering Democracy Awards (2001). Current projects address preservice teacher supervision and regional student support. She is affiliated with CREATE (Creativity in Research, Engaging the Arts and Transforming Education) and previously held leadership roles in education associations.
