Catherine Régis is a Full Professor at the Faculty of Law, Université de Montréal, holding dual Canada-CIFAR Chairs in AI and Human Rights, and in Health Law and Policy. She co-directs CIFAR’s AI Safety Research Program and leads IVADO’s Social Innovation and International Policy initiatives. Previously, she served as Special Advisor for Strategic Planning at UdeM (2021–2023) and directed health law programs at Université de Sherbrooke (2008–2012). Her education includes degrees from Université de Montréal (LL.B., 1998), University of Toronto (LL.D., 2007), and a Certificate in Clinical Ethics from Université de Genève (2001).
Her research focuses on AI ethics, global health governance, and responsible innovation. She advises governments and international bodies like WHO, OECD, and UNIDIR, and co-authored the Montreal Declaration for Responsible AI. Key roles include steering committees for UNESCO’s AI and Rule of Law program, the Global Partnership on AI, and the U7+ Alliance’s digital innovation working group.
Régis is affiliated with institutions including Jesus College Cambridge, Mila Quebec AI Institute, and H-pod. Awards include UNITAR’s Science Diplomacy Fellowship and extensive grants from CIHR, FRQ, and SSHRC. She frequently presents at venues like NeurIPS, WHO conferences, and the Supreme Court of Canada. Her legal practice includes Quebec Bar membership since 1999 and mediation accreditation.
