Associate Professor Catherine Frieman leads research in European archaeology at ANU's School of Archaeology & Anthropology. She serves as General Editor of the European Journal of Archaeology and specializes in prehistoric technology, migration studies, and biomolecular archaeology.
Her interdisciplinary work examines innovation adoption in prehistoric Eurasia, ancient DNA interpretation ethics, and community-based archaeology. Current projects include the Southeast Kernow Archaeological Survey and Triabunna Barracks excavations in Tasmania.
Frieman's publications critically engage with archaeological narratives, counter-myths in historiography, and the sociopolitics of genetic data. Recent books explore archaeology as historical storytelling and challenge hierarchical interpretations of past societies.
