Dr. Catherine Febria is an Associate Professor and Tier 2 Canada Research Chair in Freshwater Restoration Ecology at the University of Windsor's Great Lakes Institute for Environmental Research (GLIER) and Department of Integrative Biology. Her research focuses on headwater stream ecology, restoration of agricultural and urban waterways, and integrating Indigenous knowledge into ecological science. She holds a Ph.D. in Ecology & Evolutionary Biology from the University of Toronto (2010), an M.Sc. in Geography from Simon Fraser University (2005), and a B.Sc. in Environmental Science from the University of Toronto Scarborough (2002).
Her work emphasizes socio-ecological systems, microbial ecology, and equity in STEM. She leads the Healthy Headwaters Lab, investigating ecosystem services in human-modified landscapes. Key projects include the Canterbury Waterway Rehabilitation Experiment (CAREX) in New Zealand and collaborations on nitrogen management in agricultural streams. Dr. Febria advocates for inclusive scientific practices, mentoring early-career researchers, and bridging Indigenous and Western knowledge systems.
Publications highlight her expertise in stream biodiversity, restoration strategies, and environmental justice. Awards include the prestigious Canada Research Chair, recognizing her innovative approaches to freshwater conservation.
