About
Catharina Coenen is a Professor in the Department of Biology at Allegheny College, where she also contributes to Biochemistry. Her academic work spans research and teaching in plant and microbial systems, with a focus on plant physiology and ecological interactions.
Research Interests: Her research investigates the role of the plant hormone auxin in growth, development, and plant-root interactions with beneficial soil microbes. This includes studying auxin in mycorrhizal symbiosis and as a signaling molecule between plant-protective bacteria and their host roots. These studies are relevant to sustainable and organic agricultural practices by reducing reliance on synthetic chemicals.
She employs a range of experimental techniques including genetics, molecular biology, biochemistry, and plant physiology in her research. Students in her lab gain hands-on experience with diverse biological systems and transferable scientific methods.
She teaches courses such as Organismal Physiology and Ecology and Plant Physiology, integrating her research expertise into the classroom.
Education:
- Undergraduate work: Universität Bremen, Germany
- Ph.D.: Oregon State University
She maintains regular office hours and is actively involved in mentoring and undergraduate research at Allegheny College. There is no indication of part-time status, retirement, or emeritus designation.
