Cate Marvin is a Professor at the College of Staten Island since 2003, specializing in creative writing pedagogy and poetry. She emphasizes formal innovation, ambition, and revision in her teaching. Her research focuses on poetry, fiction, and creative nonfiction, advocating for wide literary engagement. Marvin holds a BA from Marlboro College, MFA degrees from the University of Houston and University of Iowa, and a PhD from the University of Cincinnati.
Her research interests include the intersection of form and content in poetry, the evolution of contemporary poetic styles, and the pedagogical challenges of creative writing instruction. She co-edited the influential anthology Legitimate Dangers: American Poets of the New Century (2006), showcasing emerging voices in American poetry.
Notable awards include the Kate Tufts Discovery Award (2002), a Whiting Award (2007), and a Guggenheim Fellowship (2015). Her work has been praised for its lyrical innovation and narrative depth, with Oracle (2015) hailed as one of the NYT's 'best books of poetry.'
