Cat Moir

Dr. Cat Moir is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Germanic Studies at the University of Sydney, affiliated with the School of Arts and Social Sciences. She holds a PhD from the University of Sheffield and an MA from the College of Europe. Her research focuses on intellectual history, critical theory, and German philosophy, particularly Ernst Bloch's speculative materialism. Moir has authored a monograph, Ernst Bloch's Speculative Materialism, and co-edits the Bloch Bibliothek series. She teaches German language/culture and European Studies, coordinating units on German thought, political extremism, and European regionalism. Current projects include a monograph on Philosophy in Modern German History. Her work bridges philosophy, literature, and science, addressing themes like utopianism, materialism, and the interplay between nature and society.

Research interests include the Frankfurt School, German idealism, and the history of materialist thought. Moir has received grants for projects on multilingual archives and Enlightenment thinking. She advises HDR students on modern German thought and collaborates on translations of Bloch's works. Her publications span journals like Historical Materialism and Hegel Bulletin, addressing topics from Weimar politics to Nietzsche's influence on Bloch.
