Cary Peñate

Cary Peñate is an Assistant Professor of Music History and Cultures in the Department of Art and Music Histories at Syracuse University's College of Arts and Sciences. She joined the faculty in Fall 2023 after previous appointments at Ball State University and University of California, Davis.

Her research examines:

• Representations of Afro-Cuban music in Latin American cinema
• Intersections of popular culture and political discourse
• Transnational musical exchanges

Dr. Peñate's scholarly contributions include comparative analyses of gender representation in opera and Cuban film. Recent conference presentations at the Latin American Studies Association and Society for Ethnomusicology explore cultural transmission through media.

She earned her Ph.D. from University of Texas at Austin (2021), M.A. from University of Miami (2015), and B.M. from University of Miami (2012).
