His research centers on Latin America's historical and contemporary contributions to international order, with specific focus on 19th century Mexican resistance to European imperial projects. Schulz examines how Mexican liberals under Benito Juárez articulated a republican vision of international relations emphasizing popular sovereignty, sovereign equality, and non-intervention—principles that continue to resonate in Global South perspectives today.
His recent work analyzes Mexico's 1860s resistance to French-imposed Emperor Maximilian as a foundational challenge to Eurocentric international order, revealing alternative frameworks for global governance that prioritize non-domination and republican fraternity. This research appears in top journals including American Political Science Review and International Organization.
