Carrie Dummer is an Associate Professor of Chemistry Instruction at Hope College, where she has served since 2005. Her responsibilities within the Chemistry Department include:
- Teaching General Chemistry laboratories
- Instructing Chemistry and Physics for Elementary Education majors
- Leading Secondary Science Methods courses
- Supervising secondary math and science student teachers
Dr. Dummer earned her M.A. in secondary education from the University of Michigan (1996) and her B.S. in biochemistry, cum laude, from the University of Notre Dame (1994). Prior to joining Hope College, she taught all levels of high school chemistry for six years, including AP Chemistry.
Her research centers on K-12 science education with specialized expertise in chemistry and physics curriculum development and professional development assessment for pre-service and in-service teachers. She actively collaborates on science education initiatives through the HHMI and Day1 programs, demonstrating a strong commitment to improving science pedagogy across educational levels.
Dr. Dummer mentors education majors through their science requirements, methods courses, and field experiences while supervising student teachers. Her work is supported by institutional programs like HHMI and Day1, which fund science education research and innovation at Hope College.
She maintains active professional memberships in the Michigan Science Teachers Association, National Science Teachers Association, and ASCD, contributing to broader educational discourse through these organizations.
