About
Caroline Mburu is a Medical Anthropologist and Research Fellow at the University of St Andrews. Her work examines socio-ecological dimensions of zoonotic diseases in East Africa, focusing on community knowledge systems, risk perceptions, and structural determinants of health outcomes.
Mburu's research investigates:
- Local knowledge and awareness of zoonoses in pastoralist communities
- Cultural and structural drivers of disease transmission
- Treatment pathways and health-seeking behaviors
- Impact of zoonotic outbreaks on livelihoods
Her ethnographic fieldwork in Tanzania and Kenya explores how communities interact with disease vectors and respond to control interventions. Recent publications analyze resilience of health systems during pandemics and stakeholder perspectives on biosecurity reforms.
