Caroline Bithell

Caroline Bithell is Professor of Ethnomusicology at University of Manchester's Department of Music, specializing in global vocal traditions and musical revival movements. Her research explores intersections of music, cultural heritage, and community practice across diverse cultural contexts.

Research focuses on:

• Georgian polyphonic traditions and cultural heritage
• Revival movements in Corsican and Georgian music
• Intercultural performance practices
• Community music-making and natural voice movement
• Music in health contexts

Recent publications examine Georgian traditional music's global dissemination, intercultural learning through ensemble performance, and applications of music in dementia care. Collaborative work with Manchester Camerata investigates music's role in supporting wellbeing through the Music in Mind program.

Bithell serves on advisory boards for cultural organizations and leads international research on musical sustainability, with fieldwork in Georgia, Corsica, and West Africa.
