Carolina Uppenberg is an Associate Professor in the Department of History and Contemporary Studies at Södertörn University, specializing in economic history with a focus on gender relations and labor organization in pre-industrial agrarian societies. She earned her PhD from the University of Gothenburg in 2018.
Her research examines:
- Gender division of labor in historical contexts
- Work organization among landless groups (servants, crofters)
- Wage systems and household economics in manorial economies
- Crisis impacts on labor relations in 18th-19th century Scandinavia
She currently leads two major projects:
- The benevolent patriarch? (2025-present): Analyzing household labor organization during crises across Baltic regions (1723-1809), funded by Östersjöstiftelsen
- Wages for labor? Investigating servant wages and material conditions in manor economies (1730-1870)
Previous research includes studies on crofter households at Stockholm University and postdoctoral work at Lund University on peasant agency during Swedish modernization.
