Carola Elisa Heesemann Rosenkilde

Carola Elisa Heesemann Rosenkilde is a Postdoctoral Researcher at the Novo Nordisk Foundation Center for Biosustainability, Technical University of Denmark (DTU), affiliated with the DTU Microbes Initiative. Her work centers on developing alternatives to conventional antibiotics through bacterial synthetic biology.

Her core research interests include:

• Antimicrobial resistance mechanisms and novel therapeutic strategies
• Class II bacteriocins and lantibiotics as antiinfective agents
• Heterologous expression systems for antimicrobial peptides
• Gut microbiome engineering for health applications

Recent publications demonstrate her focus on leveraging bacteriocins against resistant pathogens, with studies on heterologous expression (2024), rational drug design (2023), and β-lactamase resistance evolution (2019). Her work bridges synthetic biology and clinical applications to address antimicrobial resistance.

Dr. Rosenkilde completed her PhD at DTU in 2023 investigating class II bacteriocins for antibiotic resistance mitigation. Her doctoral project, funded by the Novo Nordisk Foundation (2016-2024), explored bacterial functional modules for gut homeostasis management. She maintains active collaborations including a visiting researcher position at University College Cork (2018).

She contributes to the scientific community through conference organization (12th Danish Conference on Biotechnology and Molecular Biology, 2017) and participation in gut microbiome symposia, with her research featured in multiple international media outlets in 2019.
