Carol Acton is a Professor at the University of Waterloo. She holds a PhD from Queen's University, an MA from Kent at Canterbury, and a BA Honours from Trinity College, Dublin. Her research focuses on First World War British poetry, gender and war, subjective experiences in life-writings, and the intersection of trauma and grief in literary contexts. She also explores autobiographical and biographical narratives, particularly those of non-canonical women writers.

Her teaching spans modern British literature, women’s writing, autobiography/life-writing, and Communications in Mathematics and Computer Science. Her current projects analyze letter exchanges from the World Wars to understand language’s role in subjective experience and cultural context.
Carol has received multiple SSHRC grants (2012-13, 2010-11, 2009-10) and was a Visiting Research Fellow at Oxford Brookes University’s IHCR (2009). Her publications include monographs and edited collections on war nursing, trauma narratives, and intimate wartime correspondence.
