Carmon Colangelo

Carmon Colangelo serves as the Ralph J. Nagel Dean of the Sam Fox School of Design & Visual Arts and E. Desmond Lee Professor for Collaboration in the Arts at Washington University in St. Louis. He oversees academic units including the Colleges of Art and Architecture, as well as the Mildred Lane Kemper Art Museum. Educated at the University of Windsor (BFA, 1981) and Louisiana State University (MFA, 1983), Colangelo has held leadership roles at West Virginia University and the University of Georgia. His artistic practice merges digital and traditional techniques to explore themes like global connectivity, contemporary anxieties, and environmental concerns. Recognized through major museum collections and exhibitions worldwide, he has received notable awards including the 2014 Distinguished Alumni Award and the 2006 E. Desmond Lee Professorship. His work interrogates socio-political themes through abstract and surrealist visual languages, exemplified in exhibitions like 'Here Be Dragons' (2016) and 'Infinite Abstraction' (2019).

Research interests span the intersection of technology and art history, with a focus on abstraction's evolution. Colangelo's publications and curated exhibitions, such as the 'On the Margins' catalog, address contemporary socio-political issues through art. He maintains affiliations with galleries like Bruno David Gallery and Jonathan Ferrara Gallery, where his mixed-media prints are regularly exhibited. Grants and service awards highlight his contributions to architectural education and collaborative arts initiatives.
