Carmel Price

Carmel Price is an Associate Professor of Sociology at the University of Michigan-Dearborn, affiliated with the Center for Arab American Studies and Women and Gender Studies programs. She holds a PhD in Environmental Sociology from the University of Tennessee (2011), an MSW from Tulane University (2003), and a BA in Elementary Education from UNC-Chapel Hill (2000). Her career combines pedagogical training with social work experience in gender-based violence, shaping her community-based research focus on environmental justice, food insecurity, and social inequality.

Research focuses on food insecurity, environmental justice, and social inequality through interdisciplinary frameworks. Co-founded the Environmental Health Research-to-Action (EHRA) and College and University Pantries (CUP) research teams to address campus food insecurity and community environmental health threats. Integrates teaching practices with socio-economic class awareness, emphasizing equitable access to educational opportunities.

Awards highlight her teaching excellence: 2021 HUB Faculty Affiliate, 2010 Chancellor’s Honors Teaching Award (UT), and 2010 Departmental Teaching Award (UT).

Active in mentoring undergraduates through participatory research projects, particularly in marginalized communities. Engages in advocacy for bicycle safety and environmental justice, alongside her family’s passion for soccer and gardening.
