Carman Fung

Carman Fung is a Lecturer in the Department of Gender, Sexuality, and Women's Studies at Simon Fraser University. Their research focuses on queer Asian studies, particularly lesbian subjectivity and transnational media consumption in China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan. Fung holds a Ph.D. in Cultural Studies from the University of Melbourne (2021), an M.Phil. in Multi-Disciplinary Gender Studies from the University of Cambridge (2014), and a B.A. in Comparative Literature from the University of Hong Kong (2013). Their work examines the role of transnational LGBTQ+ media in shaping queer identities, including the shift away from 'tomboy' gender roles among Sinophone lesbian communities. Fung has received recognition such as the AWGSA PhD Award commendation and IACS Dissertation Prize shortlisting. They currently teach courses on queer theory and digital pedagogy, including GSWS 826 (Graduate Seminar on Queer/Trans Studies) and GSWS 331 (Queer Genders).

Research highlights include analyzing queer women's use of dating apps (2023), studying 'tomboy' discourses in 2010s subcultures (2019/2021), and exploring transnational media misreadings of The L Word. Fung's work bridges queer theory, media studies, and transnational cultural analysis. Community engagement includes collaborating with grassroots organizations like FingerOut and contributing to Chinese Storytellers. Their current research investigates Hong Kong queer women's migration post-2019 protests, supported by SFU grants.
