About
Carlos R. Stroud, Jr., is a Professor of Optics and Physics and Director of the Center for Quantum Information. He holds an AB in physics/mathematics from Centre College (undated) and a PhD in physics from Washington University (1969). His research focuses on theoretical/experimental quantum optics, atomic physics, and quantum computing. Notable achievements include pioneering work on Rydberg electron wave packets, quantum control of atomic electrons, and quantum-state generation using nonlinear optics. He has been a Distinguished Traveling Lecturer for the American Physical Society since 1998, delivering over 75 lectures globally.
- Education: AB (Centre College), PhD (Washington University)
Research interests span the quantum-classical boundary in atomic systems, semiclassical methods, and quantum information science. His group pioneered observations of laser-modified spontaneous emission spectra and three-level atomic phenomena like coherent population trapping. Recent work includes electron interferometry within atoms and quantum protocol development.
Publications reflect expertise in quantum optics theory, experimental atomic physics, and applied nonlinear optics. Awards include Fellowships from the Optical Society of America and American Physical Society.
- Awards: OSA Fellow, APS Fellow
Leadership includes directing the Center for Quantum Information and advising on advanced quantum systems. Research teams have produced foundational work in controlled quantum systems and light-matter interactions.
