Carlos R. Baiz is the W.T. Doherty Associate Professor of Chemistry at the University of Texas at Austin and a Faculty Investigator in IRG 1. His research bridges Physical Chemistry and Molecular Biophysics through experimental and computational approaches.
His primary focus lies in the biophysics of complex systems, particularly the structure, dynamics, and self-organization of proteins and lipids within biological membranes. The Baiz Group develops advanced methodologies combining ultrafast two-dimensional infrared (2D IR) spectroscopy, vibrational spectroscopy, and molecular dynamics simulations to investigate heterogeneous lipid membranes, membrane proteins, and surfactants in crowded environments.
The laboratory maintains specialized equipment including pump-probe 2D IR setups, as evidenced by active group operations documented in photos from December 2024 and November 2021. Research emphasizes spectroscopic model development and structure-based computational analysis to decode molecular behavior in biologically relevant contexts.
Professor Baiz mentors graduate students and postdoctoral researchers in the Department of Chemistry, fostering interdisciplinary work at the chemistry-biology interface. Current projects involve sample analysis using custom FTIR spectrometry and energy conversion techniques within the group's dedicated facility.
