Carlos Pio is a Lecturer in Foreign Languages at the University of Pennsylvania. He has previously taught at the University of L'Aquila, University of Salerno, University of Strasbourg, and University of California, Santa Barbara.

- Ph.D. in Hispanic Languages and Literature with an emphasis in Medieval Studies, University of California, Santa Barbara (2014)
His research focuses on medieval and early modern literature, particularly the manuscript culture connections between France, Castile, Galicia, Catalonia, and Portugal. He specializes in works like Alfonso X's Sete Partidas, Arthurian romances, and the Crónica Geral de Espanha de 1344. At Penn, he teaches Spanish language and literature, as well as courses on Brazilian, Portuguese, and Lusophone African cultures addressing colonization, independence, minorities, race, and gender.
This semester, he teaches Portuguese for Spanish Speakers, Portuguese for the Professions, and co-teaches a graduate seminar on medieval Iberian literature. He is currently developing an inclusionary first-year Portuguese textbook representing disenfranchised groups such as LGBTQI communities, women, African-Portuguese and Afro-Brazilians, low-income groups, immigrants, and indigenous peoples.
