Professor Carlos Oya serves as Head of the Department of Development Studies at SOAS University of London, where he holds the position of Professor of Political Economy of Development. With degrees in Economics from Universidad Complutense Madrid and SOAS (MSc and PhD), he previously worked in Mozambique's Ministry of Planning and Finance.
His research encompasses three primary areas: political economy of development, agrarian change, and labor relations in global production systems. Field research focuses on African countries including Ethiopia, Mozambique, Angola and Senegal, with special attention to Chinese firms' impact on African employment.
Professor Oya leads research projects on structural transformations in African economies and has edited the Journal of Agrarian Change (2008-2022). He advises international organizations including ILO, World Bank, FAO, UNDP, and African governments.
