Carlos A. Avila

Carlos A. Avila is an Associate Professor at Texas A&M AgriLife Research and Extension Center in Weslaco, Texas. His research focuses on vegetable breeding and crop improvement, integrating conventional breeding with modern molecular tools to enhance disease resistance, yield, and nutritional quality in tomatoes, spinach, and melons. He leads projects at the Vegetable Research and Education Center, utilizing advanced facilities for molecular biology, greenhouse studies, and field trials.

• Development of high-yield spinach and tomato varieties via GWAS and genomic selection
• Application of high-throughput phenotyping and omics technologies
• Impact of production systems (e.g., high-tunnel, net-house) on crop quality
